Shipwrecks in the Florida Keys

Florida is surrounded by water. Boats travel on this water. Boats sink. When that happens, they end up like these shipwrecks and abandoned boats in the Florida Keys...

These two abandoned boats were on the side of the road in Key Largo. They were probably recently pulled from the water...
Key Largo Abandoned Boats

This sunken sailboat was in a cove nearby the Islamorada Fish Company restaurant. It probably floated free in a hurricane and sunk here.

Airstream Ranch

Airstream Ranch

Airstream Ranch is a roadside attraction along I-4 in Dover, Florida. Like Cadillac Ranch, Airstream Ranch consists of several vehicles half buried vertically in the ground, only here Airstream trailers are used rather than old Cadillacs as the name suggests.

Airstream Ranch #1

Apparently, not everyone approves of the Airstream Ranch and the county has ordered it to be removed because it violates city code. This was a while ago though, and yet Airstream Ranch is still there...

Loggerhead Shrike Chicks

While biking along the Seminole Wekiva Trail along International Parkway in Lake Mary, Florida, I came across two young birds that must have fell out of a nest. They couldn't fly, and just sat chirping in the middle of the pavement. On the way back, I found another pair that were in the grass just off of the trail. From the look of these birds, my initial thought was that they could be baby Chickadees. After looking through some more bird books, and having corrections emailed and left as comments, these birds are actually baby Loggerhead Shrikes.

The mother wasn't around, and I didn't see any nest. I wasn't quite sure what to do with these birds. I ended up leaving them alone after I took pictures. Hopefully the birds survive, although it's probably quite unlikely.

Homemade Airplane over Miami

These pictures were taken a few years ago in Miami, Florida. Someone was flying what appeared to be a homemade airplane over downtown. It must have been a wonderful view from up there, with massive skyscrapers and water all around.

Hammerhead

I came across this shark carcass that washed up on shore at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Titusville, Florida. This was the first wild hammerhead shark that I've seen, dead or alive. It looks like some kind of scavenger was nibbling on the dead shark around it's gills and stomach. The shark wasn't that big, but I suppose it's better to have something nibbling on on the dead shark rather than having the shark nibbling on your ankles while swimming...

Mole Cricket

Mole Crickets are insects that burrow under perfectly manicured lawns and chew on the grass roots, therefore destroying the perfect lawn.

I came across this mole cricket one night, and then allowed it to go free and wreck havoc on perfect lawns. I always could have cooked the mole cricket for a snack instead...

Green-Glowing Sky

After an afternoon rainstorm in Florida, on rare occasions the sky turns a greenish-yellow color and everything has a very strange glow for a while, normally until the sun sets. These pictures are from one of these occasions...

Florida's Wild Parrots

Florida has flocks of wild parrots flying in it's skys. These parrots aren't native to North America, and were most likely escaped pets that easily adapted to Florida's warm climate.

The parrots are black hooded parakeets...Flock of Black hooded parakeets

It seems like small carnivals normally don't have dark rides. This one had two! The murals on the front of these rides are always so much better than ride itself.

And that's the Seminole County Fair. It really shouldn't be called a fair though. Fairs should have farm animals and giant vegetable competitions as well as rides. The Seminole County Fair actually did once have the whole fair experience and was held at the site of the old dog track in Casselberry, Florida. After the dog track closed, the fair moved to this mall parking lot, and lost the farm animals. Without this stuff though, it's just a carnival...
