Airstream Ranch is a roadside attraction along I-4 in Dover, Florida. Like Cadillac Ranch, Airstream Ranch consists of several vehicles half buried vertically in the ground, only here Airstream trailers are used rather than old Cadillacs as the name suggests.
Apparently, not everyone approves of the Airstream Ranch and the county has ordered it to be removed because it violates city code. This was a while ago though, and yet Airstream Ranch is still there...

It's still there because Frank Bates is defiant of the law and his surrounding neighbors and community. Everyone knows when an issue goes to court (a tax payer expense) it takes time. Try this one: Most everyone would be okay with his exhibit if it were on his dealership property which is properly zoned. No, he chooses to defy the law, zoning ordinances and disturb an already established neighborhood by placing his exhibit on the property zoned for single family residence. Art is not the issue. Zoning laws are put in place to protect the integrity of everyones propery and their values. If anyone could violate zoning laws then maybe a nuclear plant or incinerator would also be okay. Who cares that Interstate 4 traffic is dangerous and people (including kids)run across the interstate to take pictures. Who cares the trailers are a safety hazzard and not stabilized? Who cares it promotes graffiti? Who cares it has brought crime and gangs into the area especially where a new school is being built. If you don't think so, read news articles in the Tampa Tribune. Who cares about their neighbor? Who cares about their community? Oh, by the way, the code enforcement has pictures to prove the Interstate 4 foot traffic. Frank Bates should put his exhibit on his dealership property and make way for traffic to enter and exhit the exhibit safely. AGAIN THE ISSUE IS NOT ART. SAFETY IS THE ISSUE AND IT TRUMPS. This is the reason for observing and obeying current laws and ordinances.
Frank Bates is not only defiant of the law, but his customers! I just bought my first RV - an Airstream - from Bates RV and everyone was very friendly and helpful - until after I took delivery. Now, I can't get through to the owner, Frank Bates - even on his supposed "home phone" number published on their web site. I have a large list of factory warranty work and they have let the RV sit for over 2 weeks without starting the work. I keep getting the cold shoulder and was told that new RV's take precedent over pro-owned ones and that I would have to wait. This is bogus and since February have not had one camping night in the Airstream that was with everything working. What a lousy first impression...
