Florida's Wild Parrots

Florida has flocks of wild parrots flying in it's skys. These parrots aren't native to North America, and were most likely escaped pets that easily adapted to Florida's warm climate.

The parrots are black hooded parakeets...Flock of Black hooded parakeets

DO you knowhow they sound..There are a flock of birds that makes a loud chattering (like racoons fighting) kinda squealing chattering sound and they fly in a large group early in the morning and lok green..I have never seen or heard these birds before ever and I am from Florida ..Just recently in the last few months since coming to the inland side of DAYTONA BEACH FLORIDA. Could they be PARROTS as they lok?..WOW

Yep, that sounds like em. They make SUCH a rukus, they're sort of a nuisance down here in S. FL. Not that there's anything u can do.

I've never seen them as far north as Daytona, but the birds you saw most likely are wild parrots.

We were so excited to see these birds on the Pinellas Bike Trail that goes from St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs. You could hear them long before you could see them camouflaged in the trees.

Saw a flock of about 20 in Satellite Beach yesterday. As others have posted, you hear their raucous cawing before you see them. Couldn't get close enough to see if they had dark heads but could tell they were green.

Where are the parrots ? I come to Delray each year, but missed coming down last year though .........I arrived last week and a day or two ago I realized there are no parrots around, raising their usual ruckas. Whats up ?

I live in St. Petersburg and very familiar with the birds. After leaving Chicago (where I now have come to learn a large population of Quaker Parrots actually live) I first moved to Ft. Lauderdale and saw them daily around the canals close to the beach. Now living in St Pete I have seen them where I live now a few times. (NE St Pete off 275-4th street). I have also seen them several times in S Tampa at MacDill AirForce base area. They are super loud and cannot be mistaken when heard...but amazing none the less!

Nanday parrots, green with the black hoods and bright red legs and feet, every morning at the Boynton Beach Inlet. Flocks of 40-50. Also Quaker Parrots in Delray. These are green with grey chests. out near 441 near the Everglades. Fun to watch.

I saw several small , bright green parrots in a large Date Palm tree near the old Bayfront YMCA , Gilchrist Park, in Punta Gorda ,FL. last week, while walking my dog.

There were nests at the base of the "palm boots" with round holes in the nesting material, the little parrot's heads kept popping in and out of the holes to look at us :)

I know they have been making use of that same tree for many years, as I can recall seeing them in it when the children were little, they r now in their 30's.

We saw a flock of about 30 of these green parrots on trees on the edge of Indian Rocks beach (July 8, 2015).

We saw several today on the Pinellas Trail. I almost thought I was back in Belize for a moment. In Belize many times I'd be on the phone and they would be so loud, people would ask me if I'm calling from the Zoo, lol. We love them. As some have said you can hear them before you see them, especially flying over.

We have lots of noisy flocks of them through the Florida Keys especially in the winter.

I've lived in South Daytona for over 17 years and have been delighted every year when I've heard a flock of these squawking birds every morning at the start of each summer. They'd be there every morning and evening, flying to and fro, and hanging out in the tall treetops until the cooler season arrived. This past year (2015), I was happy to hear them one morning as usual, thinking "ah, summer has arrived -- the wild parrots are here!" But the flock seemed smaller than usual and I realized fairly soon that I didn't continue to hear them for long... no sign of them, mornings or evenings. They had been such a daily fixture through those hottest months for so long, I was really sad about their absence. I've wondered if they just found a place they like better. A lot of old trees in the surrounding area have been leveled for construction recently, and I can't help thinking that's at least part of the reason. I hope they come back.

I have seen a flock of at least a dozen green, loud chatterers in Madeira Beach three of four times now, all the way from the causeway down to near Johns pass, flying overhead and perching on the wires. What a racket they make!

I haven't seen any in Orlando area. But I think the parrot population increased after Hurricane Andrew tore open the aviary at Zook Miami in 1992.

I am in a small town on Sand Key in Pinellas County and can hear the Quaker parakeets around here everyday this year, and have been hearing them over a 25 year period. It seems that the Black Hoods move from location to location depending upon who knows what. Some years, it is pretty quiet here, other years, like now, they are close by. I suspect that the winter temperature severity level drives them south or inland from the beachside, or not, if it is a mild winter season. When I lived in Ormond Beach in 1987, I did not experience the Quakers at all. Ditto for Deltona in 1988, no wild parakeets.

As an interesting anecdote, I had some construction giys here from Deland, that were bird guys, and they wanted to find out where the nest was so they could kidnap some of them...like I knew!

Anonymous said...

I live in Oviedo near Orlando and I heard a large flock but didnt see them because of trees but I have heard and seen them before in South Florida and there was no doubt thats what they were.

Anonymous said...

to redingtonbee, shame on you, moving a nest, shame shame shame , you live in there place, anyone touching the nest is not bird guys and being on sand will make it easy to find you, leave the birds alone.

There is a flock living in the treetops at Skyway Park in Tampa. They are very loud! I have been here for the past four Saturdays and they are always here. Hard to spot as they blend in to the green leaves.

These green parrots live off 113th St and 63rd Ave at the electric substation. I love watching and hearing them as I walk my dogs each day. It is amazing that these birds have been able to find refuge from elements of harm in Seminole, Fl

Update to my January 2016 comment: While the parrot flock that came every year for a long time to my South Daytona neighborhood used to be a fairly large size, last year it was quite small, maybe 2 or 3 parrots. So far this year, I've heard what sounds like just one who is landing in the nearby trees in the morning. I don't know what caused the flock to dwindle so much after so many years, but it makes me sad. I miss their raucous chatter and watching them fly from tree to tree and gather here each day.

I live in New Port Richey. I was sitting on my back porch this morning and heard an unusual bird call. My neighbor has a bird feeder and two green parrots came and sat on it. I have never seen such beautiful green birds here in Florida. What a site to see.

We spend time every summer on Siesta Key. There's a large flock that lives at the end of Midnight Pass, at the county park. We've seen them every summer, and last month around the kayak launch/parking area. Beautiful, and noisy.

I just took my dogs out in Sarasota and heard a big ruckus, grabbed my camera and took some shots of them. I zoomed in to see obvious green parrots with black head. It was a flock of about 25 or more loud mouthed parrots right off of Bee Ridge if you know Sarasota. Amazing sight.

We live in St Pete Beach and we have about 30 or more visit the bird feeder every morning around 8 am and again at 5 pm. They come around in the morning making noise so I know it's time to fill the feeders. We always know when its cocktail hour when they show up in the evening. We hear them squawking and know it's time to start making our evening drinks!!! I think they have us trained ;-)

Anybody know what they’re eating on feeders? Sunflower seeds? I’d like to try and attract some to a feeder. Thanks!

They love apples. Parrot or cockatiel seed mixture, peanut butter, veggies, strawberries, watermelon rind. I have one as a pet and that's what he likes.
